I’ve been getting hands-on with the brand-new Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol MX2, the next evolution in NI’s compact controller line. Designed as the successor to the S2, the MX2 feels like a true refresh for the Traktor Pro 4 ecosystem, combining a sleek new look with powerful creative tools and deeper software integration.
Key Features
- Sleek matte-black redesign with RGB pads and backlit base shell
- Larger, touch-sensitive jog wheels with CDJ and turntable modes
- Integrated Stem Control for performance based isolation drums, bass and vocals
- Built-in Pattern Player with step sequencing for custom rhythms
- One-knob Mixer FX with assignable filter, delay, reverb, noise and gater
The new MX2 design looks minimal when it’s powered down, but once lit up, the backlit pads and glowing base bring it to life — clearly in step with the visual style of the updated Traktor X1 MK3 and Z1 MK2. The jog wheels are larger and more expressive, and switching between CDJ and turntable modes gives you plenty of tactile control over your mix. Despite being lightweight, it feels solid enough for travel and live use.
Performance-wise, this thing is loaded. Stem Control lets you blend or mute individual track elements on the fly, while the Pattern Player turns the MX2 into a mini groovebox with a simple step sequencer. Mixer FX gives quick access to five classic effects using a single dial, which makes live transitions and builds super intuitive.
Everything ties straight into Traktor Pro 4, which comes bundled with the controller, unlocking harmonic mixing, key detection, and the deeper multi-FX engine with over 40 assignable effects. Connectivity covers the basics — RCA and 3.5mm outputs, mic input, dual headphone jacks and USB-C for computer hookup — all easy to reach and gig-ready.
There are still a few features we’d love to see included, like a built-in USB hub or small screen for track feedback, but the Traktor Kontrol MX2 still feels like the most balanced and capable compact controller Native Instruments has released so far. A fun, portable, and seriously inspiring bit of gear.
