This year’s Melbourne Music Week line-up is huge. So huge, in fact, that we were completely overwhelmed by the amount of cool things going on over this 10-day festival and it was nearly impossible to narrow down the events we are most looking forward to. But without further adieu, here are the eight events taking place as part of this year’s MMW that we will be sure not to miss…
Sound School 2018 Showcase
If you want to be ahead of the curve in discovering Australia’s newest up and coming DJs and electronic musicians, we suggest checking out this showcase of talent curated by the Melbourne Sound School. Joining them will be Gareth Liddiard (The Drones, Tropical F*ck Storm), cult punk band Clowns and post-punk rockers New War. For fans of good old-fashioned Aussie rock, this promises to be a memorable night of riffing, shredding and bone-rattling organ sounds.

Big Fish Little Fish: Family Rave
Calling all rave parents! Locate your neon and reapply your glitter! This family-friendly day rave is for electronic music-loving parents and their excitable littlies. The theme of the event is ‘Rockstars and Popstars’, and the line-up of DJs is massive, promising to deliver huge tracks ranging from old school house, techno, trance and classic rave. Located in the ACMI hub, this quirky event will also please the visual explorer within you as confetti canons, bubbles, play and chill zones and a craft area aim to make this a 360-degree rave experience.

Melbourne Music Week is not just about watching and listening to music, it’s also about learning about and talking about music. The MMW Talks series presents a number of free and ticketed events that cover a whole range of topics including conversations with techno pioneer Jeff Mills, exporting music to China, the current state of music journalism and a panel on artists running more inclusive events. While a bunch of these are free, many are selling fast or already sold out so move quickly if you want to get amongst this intellectual sharing parade…
Where: Various venues around Melbourne CBD
When: Friday 16th November – Saturday 24th November
Events are both ticketed and free, more information available here.
As a part of a new initiative called Self-Made, MMW is collaborating with a number of emerging producers to present events that showcase and support local and diverse artists. Salonpop is taking place as part of the Self-Made series and boy, are we excited about the merging of worlds that will take place as part of this show. This event sees a line-up of exciting electronic performers including SIMONA, Geryon, June Jones and SaD presenting their music in an unlikely environment, the iconic wooden Salon of the Melbourne Recital Centre.
