We put the Universal Audio SD-1 and SP-1 modeling mics to the test in a real-world track demo—and the results genuinely impressed us.
Key Features
- Microphone modeling with Hemisphere software
- Dynamic SD-1 ideal for vocals, content, and instruments
- SP-1 pencil condensers for acoustic instruments, percussion, and stereo setups
- UAD Hemisphere plug-in supports post-recording mic selection
- Native Spark support—no Apollo required
In this video, producer and engineer Nick Roller dives into a practical demo using the Universal Audio SD-1 and SP-1 modeling microphones. Unlike the first video, which broke down the concept of mic modeling, this time it’s all about the sounds.
We started with an acoustic guitar recording using the SP-1 positioned around the 12th fret—classic technique for a balanced, non-boomy tone. Nick laid down a warm acoustic rhythm and followed it up with some sparse ukulele accents, again using the SP-1 to capture crisp transient detail.

From there, the SD-1 took over. A shaker was tracked to add percussive texture, and then a quick vocal idea was captured. After tracking, we loaded up the Hemisphere plugin and began playing with mic models. Each source benefited from a different flavor—Nick leaned toward the SD56 on acoustic for its fuller body, and surprisingly liked the SD451 model for the ukulele, appreciating its punchy transients. For the shaker, the DN88 model added a lo-fi, rainstick-like character that contrasted beautifully with the rest of the mix.

What’s genuinely powerful here is the post-recording control. No need to reposition mics or EQ aggressively—you can dial in proximity, axis, and mic character using the Hemisphere interface. That flexibility becomes especially useful in home studios or creative sessions where speed and tone shaping are key.
Vocal tracking showcased another win for the SD-1. With a few clicks in Hemisphere, Nick was able to tame low mids and find a mic model that complemented his voice. The DN88 removed some of the honky character and brought the performance forward in the mix.
It all comes together in the final playback. With instruments panned and leveled, the combined power of these mics and the Hemisphere software delivers a polished, mix-ready sound without requiring external gear chains or mic swaps.
The SP-1 and SD-1 are professional tools with modern flexibility—affordable, intuitive, and backed by Universal Audio’s modeling legacy. We think they’re a great choice if you’re making music, producing content, or recording at home. The SD-1 and SP-1 with Hemisphere are worth exploring.
