TR-1000 1.50 Adds Note Sequencing and Keeps Effects Through Kit Changes

Roland has released TR-1000 system version 1.50, adding note sequencing and a keyboard play mode for compatible sound generators. But one of the most useful changes for a live set could be the option to keep effects and external input sound running through a kit change.

The official update history labels the release October 2026. Alongside the melodic additions, it lists 50 FM instruments from the TR-8S library, more effects and new output-routing choices. We haven’t tested the update; the details below come from Roland’s release notes.

Kit changes without cutting off the tail

The new KEEP KIT EFX & EXT IN setting carries the current kit’s external input and effects settings across kit changes. Roland specifically says that reverb, delay and external input sound continue uninterrupted when it is enabled.

That gives performers a decision to make before a set. Do you want the next kit to bring its own effects setup, or should the current ambience and external signal carry on? A long delay can be part of the transition rather than something you have to work around. The sensible rehearsal check is to try the actual kit changes in your set, especially where an external instrument is involved.

This is a setting to choose deliberately, rather than a promise that every aspect of a kit change behaves identically. Keeping the current effects settings also means thinking about how they suit the next kit.

More pitch control, with a compatibility catch

Version 1.50 adds a NOTE step parameter and a KEYBOARD play mode for compatible GENs. The word “compatible” matters: the release notes don’t say these modes apply to every sound generator. Check the current manual for the instrument you intend to use before planning a melodic part around it.

The 50 additional FM instruments expand the available sound selection, while a COARSE parameter is added to all FM GENs. For existing owners, that means there are both new sounds to explore and another pitch control to revisit in familiar FM patches. It doesn’t mean every drum sound suddenly becomes a keyboard instrument.

If you need the original hardware context, our article introducing the TR-1000 covers its launch. This update is a separate development for people already using it.

Check the outputs before your next session

A new MIX ONLY option for INDV OUT mutes a track from its individual analogue output while leaving that individual channel available over USB. It is worth checking if your studio session uses USB recording alongside analogue connections: an output setting can change what reaches the desk without removing the USB recording path.

There are also new AFX routing options, plus Roll, Roll 2, Rev Pan Delay and SBF-325 MFX types. These are practical additions to investigate with an existing project, rather than reasons to rebuild a working setup in one sitting.

For the wider instrument picture, see our guide to analogue drum machines in 2026. The useful question here is which new behaviour helps your own patterns or live transitions.

Before updating, back up your data and follow Roland’s official version 1.50 instructions and full change list. Leave time to check your saved projects and routing afterwards, preferably before soundcheck.
