Alpha Theta (The parent company of Pioneer DJ) made waves at NAMM 2024 with the unveiling of their first “Apha Theta” branded innovation, the OMNIS-DUO Portable DJ system. This marks a departure from traditional club standard DJ products from Pioneer DJ that many pros will be familiar with. However, this isn’t Pioneer DJ; it’s Alpha Theta, where the focus lies on approachable, streamlined portability, and standalone play. So, in the busy world of DJ controllers – be it the non-standalone or the portable controllers – there’s a tonne of gear hanging out in this space, which begs the question; Who is this for?
Now, it’s important to note that many people who want to play and mix tracks to an audience don’t often call themselves “DJ’s” but merely just love experimenting with making playlists and blending different types of music. It seems to us that this is where OMNIS-DUO might be uniquely placed, and if Alpha Theta’s marketing is to be believed it seems to suggest this. If this is you, then this is something you’ll want to consider.
The obvious one is for Mobile DJs, who frequently perform at events like weddings, corporate parties, and outdoor gatherings, and require equipment that is easy to transport. The OMNIS-DUO’s lightweight and portable design plus the onboard battery make it an ideal for this scenario, allowing you to set up quickly and play your set. The built in battery will certainly come in handy (as long as it’s charged) and will give you extra time to load up and play with minimal set-up plus the Bluetooth audio output is a nice touch.
But wait, here’s the kicker: Picture this – you’re spinning at an event, and you get a request for a track you don’t have. No stress! The OMNIS-DUO, you can stream the track via Bluetooth from another phone or device, and then seamlessly mix, match, and tweak the tempos and EQs, just like you would with tracks loaded from a USB or SD card. Shut the front door.
For DJs just starting their journey, the OMNIS-DUO offers a lot of accessible entry point into this world. This is a pretty crucial time in the life of anyone who goes on to become an actual DJ as it let’s explore the kind of music you would want to play, draw inspiration from others and apply it to your style plus practice your skills. Having said that, if this you, a portable standalone controller might be overkill, and at that price point there are a lot of alternatives that will get the job done.
Having a self-contained unit is perfect for online radio and livestreaming because you’re going to need a to consider a few things. Sound quality, a compact design and performance features. Especially as more and more online radio stations popup for hosting local artist interviews, podcast and blogs, having a DJ console is an essential source. A compact design, streamline controls and an all-in-one format would be ideal for this set up. However, having played on the radio before having “club standard” gear is recommended as having guest DJ’s may feel more comfortable particularly those who may be spinning vinyl.
Alpha Theta’s OMNIS-DUO caters to a wide range of DJs however portability and the convenience of standalone are the key takeaways here. I like the fact that this product is looking at people who are just looking to have fun rather than being a “pro-DJ”. Having said that, the streamlined designed aesthetic and pro-esque feature set will tick all the boxes for those who have a controller that cover’s all the bases for someone who’s not concerned about ‘pro level’ djing and looking to have a good time.
