It’s pretty cool what you can achieve with just one synth and a drum machine. It’s something I spend doing more than I’d like to admit, not only because I enjoy processes but also because it’s a great way to start a track. In this video, I thought I’d combine a couple of my favourites that both feature unique sounds and some forward-thinking sequencing techniques.
The Drumlogue is handling beats and grooves, and the MiniFreak is taking the synth/bassline part. I Love the MiniFreak for its wild oscillator algorithms, powerful sequencer and lush FX and if you’re into drum machines, the Drumlogue is absolutely one to look at with its cooky sequencer and awesome analogue tones. If you’d like to see a breakdown of each synth and dive deeper into what these synths offer, you can check out the videos I made for the Drumlogue and the MiniFreak.
When it comes to creating ideas, I’m heavily reliant on arpeggios and step sequencers, as I find that when used in combination with one another, it’s a great way to generate new ideas and patterns. Take the MiniFreak for instance, I like to record the arp into the sequencer to create a loop and then, remove steps from the patterns to create variations in the sequence. From here it’s simple enough to generate automation and “parameter locks” to give the pattern more movements. To make it really wonky, try using the last step feature to change the step length to break away from the repetitive 1-bar loop sequence.
