Having been released on November 12, macOS Big Sur is now the current major macOS available. Apple will no doubt induce you to hit that update button, however, if you rely on your Mac for music production it will worth holding off for a little while yet until compatibility issues are sorted and thoroughly tested by music production equipment and software manufacturers.
The likes of IK Multimedia, KORG, Native Instruments, Roland, Focusrite, Arturia, Universal Audio and many others are currently in the testing phase for their products to ensure compatibility and stability with Big Sur. Until thorough testing is conducted and completed, they cannot guarantee full compatibility with all of their products, so, in short, it is advised to check in on your music production and software manufacturer’s website before updating to Big Sur as it is generally been recommended to remain on macOS Catalina, Mojave or iOS 13 until further notice.
