It’s 2022 and we are all conscious of our impact on the environment and we are all able to travel again after a few years of being stuck at home. During those years, heaps of you picked up a guitar for the first time and began to learn. So now that you can travel, you’ll need a guitar you can take on holiday! And you’ll need one that limits its impact on the environment, by using a new type of tonewood. French company Lâg has ticked both of these boxes for you!
The brand-new Lag traveller series features a small, easily playable body size, graphite nut and saddle, a rounded back for better acoustic sound and a brand-new tonewood: BrankoWood.
Here’s what Lâg Guitars are saying about BrankoWood:
As part of Lâg Guitars’ commitment to the preservation of rare woods in the world, the invention of an Australian scientist came at the right time to allow Lag to implement a strategy to replace precious woods which have become both rare and expensive. It took Branko Hermescee two decades of research to produce a revolutionary process that began with the planting of short-cycle pine forests in New Zealand (radiata pine), which comply with the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The wood is first dried to only contain 10% moisture and then impregnated in pressure vessels with catalytic and pigmenting agents. The wood is then dried again to reduce its moisture content by 2 or 3% before being impregnated again under pressure, this time with natural resin. The wood is then compressed to the density of spruce for Pale BrankoWood, rosewood for Brown BrankoWood or ebony for Black BrankoWood, to achieve the same acoustic characteristics.
Effectively, the classic acoustic guitar sounds we are used to from now rare and endangered woods is achievable through this new, eco-friendly alternative. Win! So how does it sound? Well… great! The bowed back gives it that low end that a lot of traveller guitars are missing, and the rough-sawn eucalyptus back and sides with the BrankoWood top, bridge and fingerboard gives it a great look to boot!
We were fortunate to get a pre-release of the GLA TRAVEL-PBS model, and we have to say that this guitar would easily be in the ” Best New Travel Guitar” on the market today category. Why not try it out for yourselves and let us know what you think?
