Modal Electronics First Eurorack Module: Filton Exclusive to Kickstarter

Renowned innovator of next-generation synthesisers Modal Electronics announced its first Eurorack module this month, bringing the sound of a new-vintage classic to electronic musicians worldwide. Filton is a 20HP Dual Analogue Transistor Ladder Filter Module for Eurorack Filton will only be available as a limited Kickstarter edition. Modal has previously hinted at other Eurorack modules and the Filton will be their first in production, exciting stuff! Here’s hoping they develop and release more modules; the Filton looks and sounds awesome. The Kickstarter project ends October 8, so get to it!

Here’s what Modal are saying:

Based on the most popular classic filter design in synth history, Filton delivers the distinctive saturated transistor overdrive, resonant harmonic peaks and warm analogue timbres that is adored by many synth lovers for generations. In our acclaimed 002 synth, we introduced the concept of polesweeping into the circuitry to allow seamless filter morphing from four pole through bandpass to one pole 6db per octave, or anywhere in between.

Since then, we were asked by many to release the 002 filter as a separate product to use with external sound sources or in Eurorack setups. Filton is our answer to these passionate musicians and producers.

Although the ladder filter within Filton incorporates the same filter circuitry from the 002 synthesiser, Modal made many alterations to the original design to improve both stability and sound. Also, this module contains two discrete filters rather than just one, to process two sound signals independently or allow for series or parallel processing of a single source.

Each filter features an audio input, four analogue CVs with attenuvertor controls for FM, Resonance, Morph and Level, pitch tracking provided by the 1V/Oct input, an audio output and a mixed output. All CV inputs on Filter A have been normalled to Filter B, meaning any CV signal plugged into Filter A is automatically sent to Filter B if nothing is plugged into the corresponding input.

Specs:

· Dual Analogue Transistor Ladder Filter Module

· 2 x 24dB per octave four pole transistor ladder filters, with some very unusual morphing characteristics or ‘polesweeping’, enabling the transition from four pole through bandpass to one pole 6db per octave, or anywhere in between

· Processes two sound signals independently or allows for series or parallel processing of a single source

· Saturated transistor drive with LED indicator when filter input level reaches drive threshold

· 4 x controls for Cutoff, Resonance, Morph and Level per filter

· 2 x analogue FM CV inputs per filter, one with 1v/oct pitch tracking and one exponential with a bipolar attenuvertor

· Analogue CV inputs for Resonance, Morph and Level with a bipolar attenuvertor per filter

· All CV inputs on Filter A have been normalled to Filter B meaning any CV signal plugged into Filter A is automatically sent to Filter B if nothing is plugged into the corresponding input

· 1 x audio input with LED indicator and 1 x audio output per filter plus 1 x mixed output

· Matte powder coated aluminium panel

· Power: Standard +/-12V with 10 pin header

· +/-5V for CV inputs

· 20HP Eurorack
