My Gear: Adrian Montagnese

Whether they are a gear nerd or a gear noob, the type of gear an artist uses has a huge impact on their signature sound. In this regular series called My Gear, Noisegate picks the brains of exciting and diverse artists for a behind-the-scenes scoop on their favourite piece of music gear.

Adrian Montagnese is a session musician from Melbourne who keeps busy around the Australian music scene. A staple in the backing band for Melbourne soul singer ‘Kaiit’, Adrian will be touring Australia in the coming months in sell out shows across the nation. We sat down with Adrian to ask him a few questions about gear, gigs and everything in between.

Describe your current live setup?

I use a Korg Kronos 2 73 keys, I am thinking about getting a second board but the Kronos really does everything I need at the moment. I come from a workstation background, before that I used a Roland Fantom. I like having everything on one screen being able to set up setlists and split the keyboard for two independent sounds. I need something versatile for the work I do.

What synth would you look to add on to your setup?

I’m looking at something polyphonic and mainly lead sounds with pads too. My Kronos services all my Piano / Rhodes / Hammond sounds but I want something to add lead options too.

What piece of equipment could you not live without?

I would have to say my Kronos without a doubt, the possibilities are endless with this unit. It really does everything I need. As a freelance musician I am working a lot of different setups from a jazz duo using the piano sounds to splitting the keybed into two with upright bass and keys on hand. Soul Funk gigs tend to see me use organ sounds / whirlys and corporate gigs allow me to channel a heap of synth sounds for certain songs.

What’s next for you?

The next 6 months are going to be pretty busy, working with Melbourne act ‘Kaiit’ she’s an artist in the Future Soul scene and we have a heap of festivals coming up for summer. We are preparing a live show for that so there is a lot of rehearsing to get ready for these shows and I’m super excited for that.
