Player Spotlight: Mohini Dey ‘Indian Bass Sensation’

From the early age of 10 years old Mohini Dey has been a bass-power house playing with the best musicians in the world. Hailing from Mumbai India, Dey has found herself very quickly becoming India’s go-to session bassist for rock, funk, Jazz and many other genres. Her musical influences stem from bassists such as Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller and Mark King to name a few, which are all very prevalent in her playing with blistering runs and slap bass being the very core of her chops.


Mohini Dey states: 

“When I was a small child, I was drawn towards my father’s bass guitar. He noticed my interest and started teaching me. Thanks to him and my entire family, I’m able to do what i really like… I want to be a versatile musician, just like my dad… I love playing funk, jazz, blues, Indian classical and fusion…”

Dey has recently shared the stage with Jordan Rudess, Marco Minneman, Steve Vai and Federico Mallaman only helping to boost her reputation into the spotlight amongst heavy hitters in the progressive funk and jazz scenes.

Winter NAMM 2018 seen Mohini Dey very active across many booths during the biggest musical instrument trade show in the world. Promoting Mark Bass amplifiers, Mayones Basses and SIT Strings, Dey jumped from booth to booth performing to hoards of mesmerized on lookers. Her appearance at this year’s NAMM show has further pushed her into the spotlight, her viral bass videos doing the rounds on social media leaving many people asking “who is this bass machine?!’

What’s next for Mohini Dey? Rumour has it she is working with none other than Quincy Jones. An album is in the midst as well as a live performance component with the world renowned producer. Watch this space, many see Mohini Dey as the next big thing to hit the bass world!
