Virtual Eurorack Software VCV Rack Updated to Version 2.0

Everyone’s favourite open-source virtual Eurorack studio VCV Rack has been updated to version 2.0 with a long list of new features and updates.

Just like version 1 before it, VCV Rack 2 has been in beta for a while, but now it’s officially released and there’s a lot to take in, but first the important stuff.

  • The standalone program (now called Rack 2 Free) is still completely free with downloads available for Windows, Mac and Linux, and source code publicly available via their GitHub page.
  • Rack 2 Pro which includes the new plug-in version can be purchased for $99 USD until 2022 when the price will rise to $149 USD.

Rack 2 Po can also be purchased as a bundle including the premium VCV Drums and VCV Sound Stage modules for an introductory price of $139 USD.

So those of you happily running VCV Rack standalone for free can continue to do so, and there’s still no shortage of impressive free modules available via the online library, but if you are interested in running it as a plugin and maybe trying out their premium modules, now’s a good time to take the plunge.

The interface has had a nice visual overhaul with plenty of usability improvements including module browser zoom. The most striking of these new enhancements is the dark room mode whereby you can variably reduce the virtual room brightness until the only illumination is the glow of the various displays and LEDs (with an adjustable bloom). It’s a great effect that you need to try for yourself.

The full 2.0 changelog can be viewed over at their GitHub page, linked to the following news article: https://vcvrack.com/news/2021-11-30-Rack-2-released

Given the substantial number and nature of changes here, not all modules from the 1.0 library are currently available. The list currently stands at around 1500 and this number will grow as developers update their modules.

VCV Rack version 2.0 can be downloaded now via their website:
