Finding the right acoustic guitar can be a challenge, especially when balancing craftsmanship, playability, and price. Gibson’s new Acoustic Special series offers a compelling option for those looking for a USA-made instrument with high-quality materials at an accessible price. These guitars—handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana—bring the classic Gibson sound and build quality to a wider range of players.
The J-45 has been a staple in Gibson’s acoustic lineup since 1942. Known for its balanced tone and versatility, it has been used across genres, from folk to rock. The J-45 Special retains the essence of the original but comes with a slightly thinner concert-depth body. This modification results in a more focused bass response, making it well-suited for studio recording and live performance where a controlled low end is beneficial. With a SlimTaper™ neck profile, mother-of-pearl dot inlays, and a 12” fretboard radius, the J-45 Special is comfortable for extended playing sessions. Finished in Satin Vintage Sunburst or Satin Wine Red, it offers a classic aesthetic with a modern feel. High-quality Grover® Rotomatic® tuners provide reliable tuning stability, while the included soft-shell case ensures protection on the go.
Originally introduced in 1932, the L-00 remains one of Gibson’s most recognizable small-bodied acoustics. The L-00 Special continues this tradition with a design that emphasizes articulation and clarity. Its narrower waist and compact body create a naturally leaner bass response, making it an excellent choice for fingerstyle playing, blues, and intimate performance settings. The guitar features a 19-fret rosewood fretboard with a comfortable SlimTaper™ neck profile. The rectangular rosewood bridge and Grover® Mini Rotomatic® tuners contribute to tuning stability and sustain. Available in Satin Vintage Sunburst or Satin Wine Red, the L-00 Special is a great option for those seeking a smaller, more focused acoustic sound.
First introduced in 1960, the Hummingbird is known for its distinctive visual style and broad tonal range. The Hummingbird Special offers a more affordable take on this classic design, retaining key features like the solid mahogany back and sides, solid Sitka spruce top, and scalloped X-bracing for resonance and projection. One of the standout features of the Hummingbird Special is its traditional pearloid parallelogram inlays, adding to its iconic look. The concert-depth body provides a slightly leaner bass response, making it well-balanced across the frequency spectrum. With a Round-profile neck, 12” radius fretboard, and TUSQ® saddle, nut, and bridge pins, this model is designed for smooth playability. Available in Satin Vintage Cherry Sunburst or Satin Wine Red, it also includes a simplified version of the famous Hummingbird pickguard design.
With solid wood construction, quality electronics, and Gibson’s trusted craftsmanship, the Acoustic Special series provides a strong entry point into the world of Gibson acoustics. The Gibson Acoustic Special series will be available in Australia from June 2025. For more details, visit Gibson’s official website.
