Following up on some teasing throughout the past week or so, the Nord Stage 4 was announced by Clavia today. The most recent version of the company’s signature instrument includes a completely new panel design with dedicated LED faders for each layer, a premium triple sensor keybed, per-layer effects sections, and a Layer Scene function that enables users to seamlessly switch between two different sound setups. Together with the enhanced functionality, the instrument has a new preset library that is filled with ready-to-use piano, synth, and organ sounds. There are fully weighted 88- and 73-key versions as well as a Compact model with a 73-key semi-weighted keybed.
Stage 4’s Piano Library has been bolstered with an enhanced collection of grands, uprights and electric pianos, while the instrument’s synth engine has been upgraded to operate using Nord’s Wave 2 technology, taken from their synthesizer of the same name. This offers virtual analogue, FM, wavetable and sample-based synthesis, an updated arpeggiator, and an expanded stock sample library with an increased 1GB of onboard memory.
As well as two alternative versions of the pipe organ and the two B3 Tonewheel, B3 Bass, Vox, and Farfisa instrument simulations, a Vintage Rotary Speaker effect is also included, with options for a Normal or Near virtual microphone position. The Organ section of the instrument is physically controlled by drawbars that are mounted on the top panel. These drawbars are of a new design that makes use of LED indicators for enhanced visual feedback.
A new effects section that enables distinct effects to be configured for each of the instrument’s layers is also included with the Stage 4. While new iterations of already-existing effects also appear, Nord has added a brand-new Pump effect to mimic the impact of strong side-chain compression. The Delay, Amp, and Modulation processors have been modified, and new Spring, Booth, and Cathedral types have been added to the Reverb effect.
