My Gear: Jamie Payet

Whether they’re a gear nerd or a gear noob, the type of gear an artist uses has a huge impact on their signature sound. In this regular series called My Gear, Noisegate picks the brains of exciting and diverse artists for a behind-the-scenes scoop on their musical setup…

Jamie Payet is a singer/songwriter and guitarist from Melbourne, Australia. He performs his own style of Southern Rock, Alternative Country, Soul and Slammin Blues. 2018 saw the release of his new EP “All or Nothing” a 6 track collaboration of songs which he dedicates to his late Grandfather. We chat with Jamie to find out what is his go to piece of gear.

So what’s your piece of gear and why do you reckon it’s awesome?

Gretsch 6119 hollow body electric. It’s awesome because it sounds amazing, plays amazing and I’ve not heard one like it EVER!

Has it influenced your sound/playing/songwriting/process?

Oh definitely. I have learned to keep it really simple. Learning the art of creating space is something very important in my playing and my music.

Has it affected your live shows for the better?

Indeed. There’s a lot going on in my shows so the less we all play, the better

What makes you keep coming back to this piece of gear?

Every time I plug the Gretsch into the amps I use, I know I’ll get what I need. Always reliable

Have you modified it at all? Why?

Only one. Dave Ulbrick does a hum eliminating thing with the pickups. I don’t know what he did but it works 😀

Any tricks to using it you’re willing to share?

Simple. Play at a moderate volume on stage (sound guys love you for it). And play it like you mean it.

Where did you find it?

Guitar Centre New York.

How did it come to be yours?

It was sitting high up on the rack. Looked like it had been there for ages. They wanted $2500 for it and I threw $1800 on the counter. Bam! It was all mine. Lol

Are you a gear hoarder or do you tend to gravitate towards single bits of gear for long periods of time?

I have a number of guitars amps pedals etc, but as I say I keep it simple

What’s in the foreseeable future for you?

I’m moving to the US mid next year to promote and tour my music
