Impulse Record have released a incredibly well-featured free convolution reverb plugin called Convology XT. It comes packaged with 70 impulse responses, but like the Max For Live Convolution Reverb available to Ableton Live Suite owners, you can actually load your own .wav files into the plugin, so you’re not limited to IRs purchased through Impulse Record — or even properly recorded IRs for that matter.
If this is sounding like gibberish to you, lets take a step back. Convolution reverb is an effect that uses a recording within an actual space to model how frequencies reverberate in that space. That recording is called an impulse response or IR. Most commonly, that recording comes from playing a short zap sound to cover how all frequencies behave. If you do some googling, you can find IRs for all kinds of spaces, from concert halls, to caves beneath glaciers. Alternatively, one can use this method to emulate existing reverb units and record the output.
With functionality that includes the freedom to upload your own IRs, you can break the rules, so to speak. For example, try putting a guitar chord sample in there and see what kind of fun effect you get.
As well as the upload functionality, Convology XT features everything you’d expect from a world class convolution plugin – zero latency, IR Stretch and Decay functions, EQ, PreDelay, Stereo 3D Chorusing (can either emulate early DSP gear, or be applied to vocals and instruments) Stereo Width from Mono to “Outside your speakers,” Reverse and more.
