Ableton Live 12.1 Beta: Dive Into the New Features

Ableton has just dropped the details on Live 12.1 and is now in public beta. This free update brings some great additions and improvements across all editions of Live, including Live Lite and Push. We thought we’d break down what’s new and how it can enhance your music-making process.

Auto-Tagging: Simplify Your Workflow

One of the standout features in Live 12.1 is auto-tagging. This new tool automatically assigns tags to all samples in your user library that are less than a minute long, as well as to VST3 and AU plugins. This means you can quickly find the right sound without sifting through endless files. If you have a massive library of sounds, Auto-tagging will neatly categorize and make it easy to access. It should speed up your workflow, allowing you to stay in the creative zone.

Auto Shift: Real-Time Pitch Correction and Harmonization

Live’s new Auto Shift device is a much-requested feature for vocal production. It offers real-time pitch correction and harmonization, letting you manipulate and extract harmonies from vocals. By selecting a scale for Auto Shift to follow, you can create harmonies from any monophonic signal using the dedicated sidechain. This feature is perfect for live performances and studio sessions, enabling you to experiment with vocal harmonies on the fly without any hassle.

Drum Sampler: Enhance Your Drum Sounds

The new Drum Sampler is a compact sample player designed to let you tweak and enhance drum sounds quickly. It’s perfect for producers who want to add a unique touch to their beats.

Redesigned Limiter and Saturator

The Limiter and Saturator devices have been redesigned for better performance and usability. These improvements ensure that your tracks have the polish and punch they need.

Advanced MIDI Editing

Live 12.1 enhances the MIDI Editor with new filtering and selection options. You can now filter and select notes by time, pitch, or a variety of other criteria, making it easier to edit complex MIDI patterns. Additionally, two new MPE-specific MIDI Transformations—Glissando and LFO—allow you to create intricate curves for the MPE parameters of selected notes, adding more expressiveness to MIDI compositions.

Push Updates: More Control and Flexibility

Push users have a lot to look forward to with Live 12.1. Push 2 and 3 now allow you to map Macros, experiment with Macro Variations, and organize Sets more efficiently. You can also take advantage of Live 12’s new browser filters directly on Push, streamlining your workflow. Push 3 users, in particular, will benefit from the ability to add groove to all MIDI clips in your Set with a single twist of an encoder. Plus, Push 3 standalone adopts the new sample auto-tagging feature, enhancing its standalone capabilities.

For a complete list of updates, check out the release notes. If you’re a Live 12 license holder, you can join the beta program and test out these new features.
