Denise has just added ‘Bad Tape’ to their expanding range of easy-to-use little plug-ins. They describe Bad Tape as an effect plugin that emulates the slowing down of a reel to reel tape recorder in real-time.
According to denise the inspiration for the Bad Tape plugin came from their team member, Enrico Tiberi, using a lot of old Akai 4000 DS MK2 reel to reel tape recorders. He used to press the tape to slow it down as an effect and that made him want a plugin that could control how to break the sound without having to use his fingers each time and without all the cables and fuss that analogue hardware inevitably brings
As the videos below will show you, if you want an “out of tune and off the grid” beat or a wonky drum groove just keep the detune button pressed and it will create a tape-stop. Or for slight slow-downs and speed-ups, you can use wow and shake to make it go in and out of tune and go off-grid periodically. This plugin looks like a lot of fun to use and while it might not be to everyone taste, it certainly will help push your creative boundaries without spending big $$ on an analogue reel to reel tape recorder.
